Here's some raw prototype patterns in cardboard. These were copied from drawings on paper so they're not exact to size or form but should represent the overall theme of each knife style and pattern that you can get a feel for what I'm doing first.
240mm gyuto - wa & western (western on top)
*Note - The gyutos have been redesigned since I made these templates.

Woohoo! About time :) Can I order one? How much does it cost in wood or handle units? :)
Looks pretty good Dave. My personal preference is less belly on the gyutos but I'm not the average Joe.
Hi Dave i think for Sujiki i will choose more pointy tip.
Excellent stuff! I especially love the suji. Personally I would prefer a little more belly on the western gyuto handle. The curve of the blade it self looks great.
I am looing forward to seeing these babies in real life :) Good work!

I'm with Darkoek on the handle. I prefer a more pronounced palm-swell. My favorite knives also have a curved choil that transitions into the bolster.
Great feedback, thanks!
I like it too, but I'm part of the less belly group too. Either way I'm excited to see this entire process unfold!
I like how its turning out so far! I'm with Brandon on the less belly on the blade thing, but I also am part of the group that prefers push cutting. I'm pumped to see how this one develops and ends up in my eager palms :D
Just wondering. What knives are your inspiration for these prototypes. I am sure some can identify the influences, but I can't yet.
k.
Maybe a slight curve to the spine and a less abrupt drop at the tip.
Convex or flat grind?
I'm torn on the belly of the gyuto issue. On one hand I too prefer a pretty flat blade but when I work the cardboard knives on the board they're very fast and a lot flatter than they look. I may do a second FB (flat belly) model as well, who knows. :)
Oh the inspiration for these knives is all Watanabe. Not direct copies but not far off either. Of course the western handles are all my idea/designs.
Thanks again for all the comments.
I'm still on the fence about getting a wa-gyuto, but I like the relatively flat profile with just a bit of belly.
